The Associate of Fine Arts degree (A.F.A.) in Music is an applied music program, which offers private instruction in voice, piano, guitar, drums & percussion, bass, string and wind instruments. Our applied music faculty consists of accomplished musicians who have performed internationally and have demonstrated a passion and talent for teaching the upcoming generation of vocalists and instrumentalists. This degree offers concentrations in music performance (classical/jazz), popular music, and music production. Bergen’s general music and performance programs give students the strong foundation in music history, theory, and musicianship to succeed at four-year institutions, to become accomplished performers, or to begin careers as music historians or musicologists. In addition to private lessons, the department encourages students to hone their performance skills in any of our various ensembles, which include The BCC Chorus, the Jazz Ensemble, the Pop/Rock ensemble, and the Chamber Ensemble.
The Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) in Music with the music business option program offers courses in music history and theory, music business, recording and electronic music, and a strong applied music program offering private instruction and the opportunity to perform in ensembles. Bergen’s general music and performance programs give students the strong foundation in music history, theory, and musicianship to succeed at four-year institutions, to become accomplished performers, or to begin careers as music historians or musicologists. Our music business program prepares students either for a career in the business side of the music industry or to be business-savvy composers and performers. Coursework in this area prepares students to do business both in the “indie” world and in the major label world of the music business.
The Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.)- Music Technology option is an applied music program offering courses to students interested in exploring and refining their talents in music technology and production. Experienced professionals teach courses in digital recording, MIDI production, and electronic music in two state of the art production facilities in West Hall, which are The Ron Mazurek Music Technology Lab and the West Hall Recording Studio. Bergen’s Associate in Applied Science in Recording Technology program is geared towards students looking to enter the workforce with a 2-year degree with the technical aptitude to work in a recording or broadcast studio or in live sound reinforcement. Our Certificate in Music Technology is a one year, full-time program (or can be done part-time over a greater length of time) which results in a New Jersey approved certificate in music production. The Certificate of Achievement in Commercial Music Production is geared towards students who do not need a college degree or full certification but would like to learn about music production in the structure of a part-time one-year program.
